Sloths + Lambies = Too Much Cuteness

Mrs Alma kept asking me if I would do "sloths" with the lambies. Once those snakes were done she absolutely insisted - she's got a thing for sloths! I do too, they really are so adorable. 

For the lesson I read "Slowly, Slowly, Slowly Said the Sloth" by Eric Carle. In the story a sloth keeps being questioned by a variety of animals about why he does things so slowly. Each time the sloth just continues what he is doing because that is who he is. Eventually he explains that it is because that is just who he is.

The lambies loved naming each of the animals that the sloth was talking to throughout the story. I read the words while emphasizing how slowly a sloth moves and then afterward all the lambies got up and we walked as slowly as we could, trying to be "sloth like".

Afterward I set out the materials for them to use:

sloths cut out of 3 different browns of 12 x 18" foam sheets

circles for the sloths faces (they needed to choose a different color than the sloth they were using)

glue sticks

sequins

fluorescent oil pastels

different shapes cut from the excess from the brown foam sheets like triangles, squares and rectangles

First they needed to glue on their face.

Then they were told to do whatever they wanted with the materials, but were encouraged to add facial features to the faces in whatever way the wanted.

Mrs Alma added these to the classroom rainforest installation, making sure to hang them from their legs - she tells me the lambies admire them often and they really look great along with the snakes and big leaves!
