Mona Lisa, Kindergarten Style!

My Mona by Mariah
In kindergarten art this year we learned about the Mona Lisa by reading book Who Stole Mona Lisa? by Ruthie Knapp.

The students loved learning about DaVinci and his Mona Lisa, and the interesting journey she has taken in her long life.

Next, students colored a small black and white printout of Mona Lisa, and I showed them how to take their time and do their best coloring work and craftsmanship while still allowing them to use their colors creatively. I made this poster to emphasize the difference:

The next time we met they began their final Mona Lisa inspired artwork. The materials I supplied were:
  • plasticine (or modeling clay)
  • illustration board cut into 4 inch squares
  • a colored printout of the ML
  • a same size black and white printout of the ML
I cut up the plasticine into manageable pieces and made them available as needed for the students.

Here are the students hard at work:

The Head of School even joined us for a little while to give it a try!

And... some of the beautiful finished works!
