Wooden Cubist Face Sculptures - Goofy & Fun!

Once my second graders finished their Spain-inspired artworks, I had all of them work on these Picasso-inspired cubist faces made with wood pieces and tempera paint.  

First, we studied Picasso's cubist portraits, and talked about how he simplifies planes and parts of the face into shapes.

The tables were set with images of Picasso's works so that students could see his style as they worked. Each set of two students shared a BabeBot filled with wood glue. At each place was a base of two pieces of wood glued together to be the planes of the nose and the face. 

On the common table were the wood pieces. I found a variety of sizes and shapes online and put them out in trays. Students were allowed to use as much as they needed to create either a symmetrical or asymmetrical face. 

 The students really enjoyed creating these faces - here they are hard at work with the assembly...
