Second grade learned all about foreground, middle ground, and background, and then they did a quick collage exercise using this printable from the Getty Center's Art Ed dept.
Next time we met we talked about the artist "tricks" of overlapping, relative size, and placement on the picture plane to enhance the illusion of depth in a flat artwork. After drawing an idea for a design in their sketchbooks, they got to work choosing a background color, middle ground, and foreground. They worked hard cutting out the things they wanted to include and were pretty darn excited about the variety of scrapbook papers they were able to use.
