Second Graders Learn How to See Like an Artist


Second grade learned more about how to draw from observation this year - which means there were actual objects on their tables and they drew them as best they could by paying close attention to what they saw. 

For the first lesson, students had lots of items on their tables from the art room, such as tubes of ink, scissors, tape, etc. They practiced looking closely at and drawing these objects, working on noticing the details in them. 




The next week, I set up canisters of art tools for them to draw, one at each table, and gave them a brief set of guidelines for success:






They set to work, trying to include details as well as all of the objects at their table.

Once they finished drawing their still life, they learned about line weight, using thick lines for the edges of objects, and thin lines for any details on the inside of the objects. 


Next, we talked about how to add shadows to make the artwork look more realistic. The children used blues and purples to create their shadows. Here are some of the amazingly beautiful artworks they made:
